Teaching Design
ChALLENGE
Coding bootcamp Flatiron School launched a design course in London in 2019. Working as the first Lead Instructor hired on the campus, I taught multiple phases of the course to around 85 students. I presented at events, liaised with client partners and helped to scale the instructor team.
MY ROLE
Lead Instructor, UX/UI Design
THE PROCESS
As Flatiron School was founded in New York and known as a coding bootcamp, one of the challenges was raising awareness of its design education offer in the UK. We hosted a launch party to market the new UX/UI design course on our campus in WeWork Moorgate, London where I spoke on the panel.
At full capacity we hosted two cohorts of students who were based in the Design Studio campus space for 12 weeks each. Students were guided through team projects involving research, prototyping and testing including one client project working with a startup.
Our instructor team of experienced designers brought different specialities to the programme. We frequently added new topics to the curriculum in response to feedback, such as agile working and how to ace teamwork.
OUTCOMES
Graduates of the course are now working in design jobs at Nemetos, CyberDuck, Sky, Farfetch, GoSweat, EngagingTech and CollectiveFood
TESTIMONIALS
“Jess was a fantastic teacher. Not only was she dedicated to passing on her vast knowledge to her students, but also she genuinely cared for our development and growth. Jess’s dedication, and extensive industry experience she brought into her teaching made my time in the UX/UI Design programme with Flatiron School both enjoyable and valuable. I particularly enjoyed our 121 sessions because she could always lead me to the right direction and provide inspiration.”
Yao Chen, Flatiron School graduate“While I was speaking to prospective students and showing them around campus, I always tried to introduce them to Jessica. She is the reason why so many students have committed to a huge career change, but then delivered on that promise a thousandfold and developed some of the most amazing UX and UI designers I know. More importantly, she has given students the confidence they needed to achieve their dreams.”
