Remote Hackathon planning

Miro boards for Workhuman’s Hackathon

Since I joined Workhuman to lead the Product Research team, it has been a whirlwind of getting to know the theory of social recognition which underpins an amazing software product. Social recognition is about peers recognising each other for the work they do and the contribution they make. In this way, it’s different from the top-down way companies usually reward people. It’s been fascinating to see how this can really change culture for the better. Receiving recognition from others around me has been a frequent energy booster and happy surprise during the last year and a half.

One of the initiatives that stands out in my experience in Workhuman is collaborating on the organisation of the remote hackathon in 2021. This was continuing a tradition of hands-on UX workshops to generate ideas from different teams as a competition. Running it over Zoom required a total re-think! We designed Miro boards with design-sprint exercises finishing with a showcase and voting. The final outputs were extremely innovative, I learned a lot and the workshops remain something we frequently revisit in the team.
